What the critics say (scores are out of 100)
V3 | Alastair Stevenson Offering reasonable performance combined with the security and productivity benefits of Windows Phone 8.1, the Lumia 535 is one of the best affordable handsets available to businesses. Read full review |

TechRadar | Max Parker While this may be a Microsoft branded device, the Nokia Lumia legacy influence is still here. It may be built for a budget consumer, but with a 5-inch display and 5MP selfie shooter, there's still a lot to like here. Read full review |
phoneArena | Paul K. The Lumia 535 manages to deliver a good chunk of the Windows Phone 8.1 experience, for a measly cost. It is by no means a daily driver for experienced users, but we'd recommend it as an entry-level device for people who are OS-agnostic. Read full review |

PC Advisor | Jim Martin We're fans of Windows Phone 8.1 but the Lumia 535 compromises in too many areas to make it a bargain at its price. The new Lumia 535 addresses some of the criticisms of its predecessor - the 530 - but still fails to impress, even at this relatively low price. Read full review |

Gadgets Now | Anupam Saxena ...not as rich as Android and iOS when it comes to apps but the basics are pretty much covered...the phone is slightly expensive for what it delivers. More so when you look at Android alternatives like the Xiaomi Redmi Note and Asus ZenFone 5 that offer a much richer app ecosystem in addition to superior hardware specifications. Read full review |
S21 It offers the basic features required from a smartphone, but is limited by a slow processor and a lack of apps. Read full review |

Trusted Reviews | Andy Vandervell It's worth considering if you need a cheap, dual-SIM phone, but in its in single-SIM guise â as we'll see it in the UK â it's a hard sell. We like the cameras and the option of removable covers, but the fact that those covers (and the battery) can pop off when dropped is a serious design oversight. Overall, there are some good ideas in the Lumia 535, but the execution falls short in a few important places. Read full review |
Wired UK | Dave Oliver Despite the change of name, the Microsoft Lumia 535 is pretty much business as usual. It's a solidly put together budget-priced workhorse of a phone that will get most jobs done without particularly excelling in any department. Read full review |
Digital Versus | Sofian Nouira The Lumia 535 is pretty impressive for an entry-level smartphone. Obviously there are a few faults, but for the asking price, you're getting a fluid and responsive smartphone with a decent screen. If you're looking for something a bit smaller, you might want to look at the Lumia 630, or even the 4G Lumia 635. Read full review |
Digital Spy | Spencer Hart The Microsoft Lumia 535 impressed us with its good build quality, and excellent number of free services. However, the device has its problems - the camera isn't amazing, and the operating system is sluggish. Read full review |

The Gadget Show The Microsoft Lumia 525 is part of the same solid Lumia series that we've grown fond of, and that means you get top-notch build quality and a phone, that's well, a phone. It doesn't have the sharpest screen, nor the latest apps or the fastest processor, but for under £100, it's a budget phone that will suit you in a pinch, or one for the kids. Read full review |
PC Pro | Dave Stevenson It's easy to pick faults with the Lumia 535. However, the biggest hurdle to the Lumia 535's success is the quality of the competition: with Honor Holly packing in a far better display and superior camera, the first Microsoft-branded Lumia fails to hit the mark. ITProPortal | Henry McIntosh If you're looking for a cheap smartphone that performs basic tasks adequately enough then the Lumia 535 is worth considering. There are few better phones in the 535's price Read full review |
Recombu | Alex Todd It's arguably the weakest link in Microsoft's newly acquired Lumia lineup right now. It does its job but not much else. Read full review |
IT PRO | Adam Shepherd Not even its bargain-bin price can save this Windows phone from its many, many inadequacies. Read full review |
Expert Reviews | Katharine Byrne We're not sure how Microsoft's gone so wrong with the Lumia 535, but it remains one of the worst Windows phones we've ever tested. Read full review |
