What the critics say (scores are out of 100)
Alphr | Alan Martin, Jonathan Bray ...it's one hell of a smartphone, and delivers more bang per buck than any smartphone to date. Read full review |
Expert Reviews | Christopher Minasians With its blinding speed, excellent camera and superb battery life, the Moto G4 makes all other budget smartphones utterly irrelevant Read full review |
Stuff | Andrew Williams A solid gold bargain, this is the new go-to budget phone, particularly for apps and games lovers... Everything we've loved about the G-crew to date is still here. The price, the performance and the sensible hardware are all spot-on. Read full review |
IT PRO | Alan Lu This cheap Android phone is so good, it's also a serious rival to much more expensive phones Read full review |
TechRadar | James Peckham The Moto G4 is an impressive improvement upon older generations of Motorola's most popular handset and it may well be the best phone you can buy on a budget. Read full review |
Mobile Choice | Sunetra Chakravarti The G4 is a very well-rounded smartphone. Sensible pricing, pure android, good cameras and no-nonsense build quality coupled with the infinite customisation options make it an almost irresistible budget option, but I would have preferred for it to be slightly smaller, waterproof and with a non-plastic body. But it is great as it is. Read full review |
Trusted Reviews | Max Parker You'll need big hands, but once again the Moto G4 is the budget smartphone everyone needs to beat... The camera, screen, power and simple approach to Android are all winners, and while I'm not a complete fan of the textured rear, that's just a minor quibble that's completely down to personal preference. Read full review |
NotebookCheck | Florian Wimmer If you can waive the fingerprint scanner and do not use the camera that often, you can save some money with the standard Moto G4.... All in all, we can recommend the Moto G4, and you can also customize it with the MotoMaker if you want to. Read full review |
Engadget | Devindra Hardawar The Moto G4 is a decent step up from the Moto G, thanks to its larger and sharper screen. But it still doesn't have a great camera. Read full review |
pocketnow | Juan Carlos Bagnell The Moto G4 and G4 Plus are great little phones...these phones more than handle the basics, and provide very good value for the money you might spend. Read full review |
TechPP (Technology Personalized) | Nimish Dubey Yes, with the G4 Plus, the Moto G has indeed come to the spec wars. But more as a worthy warrior than a general. Read full review |
Know Your Mobile | Paul Briden What Moto has achieved here is stunning: it's built an ultra-cheap handset that packs in excellent design and utility as well as excellent specs and good hardware... This is not a flagship handset, so you cannot expect it to move mountains. But what it can do is provide you with excellent across the board performance and great practically for well under other's price range. Read full review |

S21 The motorola G4 does everything you could ask of a mid-range phone. Running Android M, its strongest features are probably its high resolution 5.5 inch screen and its larger than average battery. It's water repellent too, with an 8-core processor, 16GB of memory, and a good camera. Seems like nothing missing. Read full review |
ZDNet | Matthew Miller There are some excellent choices today for buyers looking for affordable and functional smartphones. If Android Pay is not an issue for you, then you may want to visit the Moto Maker site and customize your own G4 or G4 Plus. The better camera and increased RAM option may be worth the extra price for the G4 Plus, but the G4 is also a very capable device that should satisfy the masses. Read full review |
PC Mag | Ajay Kumar Motorola's Moto G4 is a relatively affordable midrange phone with a mix of capable hardware and broad support for all major carriers. It's a good option for budget buyers. Read full review |
The Inquirer | Matt Farrington-Smith The new Moto G is just as essential as ever. But it has its work cut out if it wants to be heard above the cacophony of its competitors. Luckily Lenovo knows how to marry build quality with value, so the G4 retains some of the magic that accounts for its popularity year on year. Quite simply it's a joy to behold. Read full review |
Pocket-lint | Mike Lowe if you're looking for budget then Motorola [G4] continues to rule, its price point hard to ignore for a phone that will handle most things you care to throw at it. Sure, it's a bit slow to load apps, but the octo-core processor and graphics on board can handle most games without stuttering, while the middling power and so-so screen resolution/brightness mean effective battery life throughout the day. Read full review |
CNET UK | Andrew Hoyle With its big, bold screen, water-resistant design and rock-bottom price, the Moto G4 is a dazzling deal.... With the Moto G4, Motorola has produced a phone that perfectly balances great all-round performance with superb value for money. The swift interface, decent camera and water-resistant design make it a brilliant everyday phone, regardless of whether you're on a budget or not. Read full review |
V3 | Matt Farrington-Smith The Moto G4 is the only sensible choice for those looking for a smartphone on a budget... Now in its fourth generation the new Moto G is just as essential as ever. But it has its work cut out if it wants to be heard above the cacophony of its competitors. Read full review |
The Guardian | Samuel Gibbs The new Moto G4 has lost a bit of the charm that made the previous Moto Gs delightful and has grown considerably in size, but is a step up in terms of overall quality. It has a good screen, a day's battery, decent performance and cameras, plus a microSD slot and dual Sim support if you need it.... The biggest problem, however, is that the new Moto G is no longer quite as cheap as its predecessors. Read full review |
Gadgets Now | Komal Mohan ... the Moto G4 is quite a well-rounded smartphone. And even though we recommend it, it would be good if you consider the alternatives as well. Read full review |
Australian PC World | Jason Cipriani The Moto G4 Play will get the job done, so long as its duties are limited to light computing and the occasional gaming session. Read full review |
Digital Trends | Simon Hill Lenovo focused in on all the right things with the Moto G4. The big display is a pleasure to use, the camera is solid, the battery lasts beyond a day, and performance is smooth. Read full review |
Tom's Guide | Lauren L'amie Get the Moto G4 if you want a big, bright screen and decent performance from a budget smartphone. But if you want a better camera, consider the slightly more expensive Moto G4 Plus. Read full review |
Gizmodo UK | Alex Cranz The Moto G4 could have been this year's Best Cheap Phone.... It's got a great body, a gorgeous display, and I've had to charge it exactly once in the last five days. But the Moto G4 also so slow that you if you love phones, you will hate yourself while using it. Speed doesn't always matter, but when you run this slow, you gotta cut your price to match. Read full review |
SlashGear | Chris Burns Moto G4 is still the best smartphone on the market. Motorola's industrial design may have become a bit more bland this time around, but the device is right on the money for cash value. Read full review |
Android Headlines | Alexander Maxham While I loved the experience of using the Moto G4, I think most people should pick up the Moto G4 Plus, as it is a bit more future-proof than the Moto G4. Seeing as it sports more RAM and a fingerprint scanner. However, if you are short on money, then you really can't go wrong with the Moto G4. Read full review |
Mashable | Raymond Wong The Moto G4 and G4 Plus are both solid budget phones, but, the G4 Plus nets you a better camera and a fingerprint sensor. Read full review |
TechnoBuffalo | Brandon Russell The Moto G4 isn't the most powerful device on the market, it provides a nice balance without making too many major compromises. I mean, yeah, I did notice that the Snapdragon 617 chip and 2GB of RAM did struggle when really kicking the device in the tush. But it wasn't so bad where it interrupted my flow. I could play games, watch YouTube videos, take pictures, and the device held up just fine. Read full review |
phoneArena | Stephen S. They're both [G4 and G4 plus] good handsets worth picking up if they happen to deliver exactly what you're looking for. But with so many options out there, it's worth your while to consider all the alternatives before sinking the cash on this year's Moto G Read full review |
Phone Scoop | Eric M. Zeman The Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus are the result of that unemotional, business-driven reflex. They are soulless phones that have been stripped of the heart Motorola put into the first three generations of G-branded handsets. Read full review |
